FTP (in)security

FTP was invented a long time ago, when security on the Internet was assured by the honesty of the tight-knit Internet community. As such, FTP doesn't provide any encryption for the data it transfers, and it doesn't provide secure authentication for the users who access it. If you are transferring eyes-only data, you should consider the alternatives such as:

  • getting an account on our our secure FTP site,
  • asking for a VPN connection to Makeda,
  • delivering the data by courier on removable storage.

FTP is a fine choice for transferring artwork for flyers, business cards, or anything else which nobody would want to spy on. If this fits your requirements, then read on to find out how to use the FTP site.

General overview

A general overview of how to use our FTP site:

  1. Get a username and password from Makeda.
  2. Login to ftp.makedapress.com
  3. Upload, download, make new directories, etc.
  4. Inform Makeda that you've finished uploading, or that you've downloaded all that you need.

Take note:

  • Usernames and passwords are case-sensitive. Neither contains any spaces.
  • There are a lot of "ftp"s floating around. There is the ftp in the protocol (ftp://), the ftp in the hostname (ftp.makedapress.com) and the ftp in your username (which starts with ftp_)

Choosing an FTP client

Here are the FTP clients which are known to work well with Makeda's FTP site.

For Windows:

For Mac OS X:

Most web browsers can also browse FTP sites, on top of browsing web-sites. These really limit you to browsing and downloading from the FTP site -- not many web-browsers will give you the required functionality to also upload to the FTP site. Uploading is what you need a full-fledged FTP client for (like the ones listed above).

If your FTP client is not working for some reason, let us know and we'll fix it.

Windows Explorer Detailed Instructions

Here are some instructions to get you started using Windows Explorer (which is very different from the web browser Internet Explorer):

  1. Open Windows Explorer: Simply go to "My Computer". You can usually find "My Computer" from your start menu, or if you have a keyboard with a "Windows" key, then you can press "Windows"+E to open Windows Explorer.
  2. Go to Makeda's FTP site: In the Explorer address bar, type in ftp://ftp.makedapress.com and hit Enter (see image below). If you don't see an address bar, it's probably just hidden. In that case, go to the menu View --> Toolbars and select Address Bar.Image:AddressBar.png
  3. You should be prompted for your username and password. Enter your credentials and leave the other options unchecked. If you were not prompted for a username, you won't be connected. In that case, you have to manually log in. Just go to File --> Login As... to log on with your username.
  4. You should now see your FTP home directory, which will usually be empty. If you just want to upload something to Makeda, just drag and drop your files and directories into the window, or into a specific folder if you've created one.
  5. If your upload was successful or not, let us know. If it was not successful, we can fix the issue. If it was successful, email or call us to let us know you have finished uploading to the FTP. This is the only way we'll know for sure that your file has been completely uploaded. (There is a much more robust way to ensure your file has been transferred correctly, which is to create a MAC such as an MD5 sum for your file(s). If you are up to it, feel free to generate hashes for your files, which we will be glad to confirm.)
